Pickling is the removal of oxides from the surface of metals by converting them to soluble compounds. The removal of oxides from the surface of metal sheets is pivotal to further process them for extrusion, rolling, painting, galvanizing or plating. Acid treatment is a process, in which the base metal is subjected to mild, moderate or aggressive etching. The pH value of the solution is generally below 2. This process helps to dissolve oxides produced from the machining and manufacturing processes. The acid cleaning also removes scales and rusts.
MIP pickles with sulphuric acid because it is a strong acid with hygroscopic and oxidizing properties.
The metal plate that undergoes acid pickling will oxidize (rust) when exposed to atmospheric conditions of moderately high humidity. As a result, a thin film of oil or similar waterproof coating is applied to create a barrier against moisture in the air. This oil film must later be removed for fabrication, plating or painting processes.
We use a one 285 gallon tank for our pickling and oiling process. MIP is a certified Class Two vendor of the ISO 9002 quality system.
